Shortales German Shorthaired Pointers is an exclusive breeding kennel is Ramona California located in the northeast foothills of San Diego County.

I have been involved in purebred dogs since 1968 when my mother Audrey bought me an Irish Setter to show. Although the Setter wasn’t really show quality we participated in the breed ring, junior showmanship and obedience. We also attended fun field days with the Irish Setter Club of San Diego the first dog club affiliation. My Mom was a wonderful support for this adventure as she had to drive me around since I was just a kid. Although her family wasn’t “in” purebred dogs they always owned purebreds including, Irish Water Spaniels when living in Canada, German Shepard Dogs and Cocker Spaniels.

While still in high school I started working for Carl and Marge Lewis who were Dachshund breeders and Carl was a Professional handler. I traveled with them to shows or stayed home and took care of their breeding kennel. I owned a Longhaired and Wirehaired Dachshund that were American and Mexican Champions. Marge was my mentor in pedigree research and breeding plans.

The summer between High School Graduation and College it was off to Dog Grooming School in Los Angeles (to help pay my way through college). I then decided that I wanted a sporting dog that didn’t have to be groomed too much for shows as my school schedule didn’t allow for it. So I contacted Inge Clody of Minado’s German Shorthaired Pointers and bought “Jasmine” as a 7 week old puppy in 1973. Jasmine became American and Canadian Ch. Minado’s Starr Jasmine and the foundation of Shortales kennels.

I have a “real job” as a cancer researcher in the lab of Dr. Michael Kelner at UCSD where I have worked since 1983. This is where I met my husband Tim. Research and German Shorthaired Pointers are my passion. This has lead to my recent appointment as the Parent Club Health Committee Chairman in 2006.

Tim was doing his Post Doctorate research at the UCSD Cancer Center following his graduation from USC with a PHD in Molecular Biology. He didn’t have a dog at the time because of school but his family has always owned Boxers and he had a Black Lab that was his very own dog as a child. When he first met the shorthairs it was love at first sight. For his birthday that year I gave him his first shorthair “Panache”. Tim supports me in my “dog show habit” staying home and taking care of the dogs that aren’t being actively campaigned. Tim takes an active role in puppy socialization and can be found carrying around puppies while he is out tending the property. He is also a much better obedience trainer than me. We have quail on the property so he can take the dogs out to test their natural hunting abilities. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do all activities that this breed is good at but we do feel it is important to give the dogs a chance to find birds.

We both take an active role in educating the public on responsible dog ownership whenever we can. We feel it is important to help friends, family and the public find the best dog for their lifestyle so we are happy to do breeder referral for many breeds.
